Sulfated glycosaminoglycans such as chondroitin sulfate are key structural components of articular cartilage. They form part of proteoglycans, whose three-dimensional structure and strong affinity for water help cartilage retain moisture, maintain elasticity, regulate selective permeability, and resist compression. Supplemental chondroitin sulfate is commonly used in veterinary joint and tendon care because of its chondroprotective and cartilage-supporting properties. It may help reduce inflammation and discomfort while supporting cartilage repair. Chondroitin sulfate also contributes to the synthesis of proteoglycans and collagen, processes that are important for maintaining healthy cartilage and connective tissue.
